What are Free Radicals & How are they Formed?
To fully understand the importance and need for antioxidants in our diet, it’s crucial to understand the cause of cell damage and ultimately illness. “Any molecule or atom which has an unpaired electron in its outer orbit is known as a free radical. Free radicals are very unstable, highly reactive molecules. Normally free radicals are continually created in the millions in your physiology to carry on the metabolic activity of the body. They are essential to life, we need them, and they fight infection. Our cells give a burst of these free radicals to kill the germs when we become infected with bacteria, fungus, and parasites. As soon as these free radicals are created, they are checked by enzymes in the body which are known as anti-oxidant enzymes, or nutrients in our food that are known as anti-oxidant nutrients. If the generation of free radicals is more than can be handled by the enzymes or anti-oxidant nutrients, then trouble arises, and they create damage in the cell membrane. If we remove the damage we are causing, these diseases can be prevented.” Dr. Hari Sharma M.D. Professor of Pathology and Director of the Cancer Prevention and Natural Products Research at the OSU College of Medicine.
